Settle
u-15s slipped one place but avoided the drop by 2 points. They had 4 wins
against Steeton, Skipton, Sutton and Gargrave but 5 rained off matches put
them under relegation pressure. A loss in a high-scoring quarter-final to
winners Pendle Forest in the Hargreaves Cup was also a great effort. Once
again Settle proved a solid outfit. However only 2 wins for the under-13s did see them relegated for 2010. The victories were over Embsay and Pendle Forest. Wicket taking was the problem with only 39 coming their way. In the Hindle Cup they overcame Denholme Devils but then lost to finalists Oakworth. There were no qualifiers for the average lists. The under-11 team took four wins to finish third albeit 7 points behind second placed Steeton. Bingley (twice), Steeton and Wharfedale Rams all fell to the Settle lads, whose batting was outshone by their bowlers. Sadly the side were the year's second "loss on a toss" clubs in the Barritt-Stephenson Cup. They did have two prize winners with Ben Hulse taking the batting without losing his wicket whilst William Booth had the stupendous average of 0.55 from 11 wickets, conceding just 8 runs. Amazing! |

Six wins earned a sixth place in Division Two of the Brook Taverner League with 19 points. They were victors over Cowling (twice), Rams (twice), Haworth and Steeton. A first round exit to Haworth West End came in the Hindle Cup. Both batting and bowling was average for the Division but Tom Leach was far from average with his batting claiming 2nd place with 155 runs and out just the once. Both Appleyard brothers, Jack and Ben qualified as bowlers. For the under-11s there was relegation from a strong top Division with 4 wins over Oakworth, Bradley, Skipton and Denholme. Cup wins over Haworth West End and Bradley took them to the semi-final stage where they were well beaten by Oakworth. William Pullen and Ben Sugden made the bowling lists but the batters were absent. For the third time in four tournaments, the club under-9s side captured the CoachingMats title on run-rate from Oxenhope. the batsmen proved the strongest on view whilst the bowlers ranked second. |
Skipton![]() ![]() |
The under-17 team had a lucky escape from relegation and proceeded to show that they were good value for that. 7 wins and 7 losses kept them in fifth place of the KC2000 League. Their run in the Spencer Cup was amazing after victory over Haworth they pipped Cononley in a tie on fewest wickets lost and then defeated Haworth West End by 3 runs in a semi-final of 301 runs. Their opponents were local rivals Embsay and together they produced the best final for years. Sadly for them Skipton lost by 8 runs. The side had four batting qualifiers in Andrew Watson, Keir Nelson, Guy Andrews and Peter Herbert. With the ball Adam Collett was runner-up. Picking up on their under-13 pedigree of two years back, Skipton stormed to the under-15 Pro Coach Academy Championship in fine style. 8 wins brought the title by 6 points in a rain-sodden year. They did lose twice; to Settle and Sutton. A close call loss to Oakworth was a round 1 exit in the Hargreaves Cup. The bowling attack was the finest on offer and Prize winner Sam Baldwin, Ben Holderness and Harry McEneaney all finished in the top five in the league. In a continuing top season for the club, the under-13s gained promotion with nine wins in the Brook Taverner league. The one blemish on the record was at the hands of Sutton. In the Hindle Cup there were wins over Embsay and Haworth West End before narrow defeat to Oakworth in the semi-finals. Izaak Beck and u12 Test Captain George Sutcliffe led the batsmen and George was joined by Matthew Mukherjee and James Laycock in the bowling. The under-11s team picked up five wins to take the club tally to 29 for the season. In the Cup an early exit came at the hands of finalists Oakworth. Nick Atkinson was a double qualifier in the average lists. |
Steeton![]() |
Following a hefty defection of players to Cononley, the 2008
Champions Steeton under-17s struggled in the always strong KC2000 league. In
a real ironic twist their only win came against already Champions Sutton
before inevitable relegation. Both batting and bowling was severely hit in a
difficult year for the squad. A first round Cup win over Glusburn preceded a
narrow defeat to Sutton. Youngster Saleem Qureshi
was a sole batting qualifier and 20 wickets from
Charlotte Boulton was a first ever female qualification in the
bowling.
The under-15 squad too was in the doldrums and failed to pick up a win in a second relegation for the Summerhill club. They also sadly conceded their 1st round Cup tie. Both batting and bowling was sub-par and a rebuild around Qureshi will be required. At under-13 level the side gained 3 wins in Division Two, to Haworth (twice) and Cowling, slipping one place to seventh. There was also an early exit from the Cup to Oakworth. Wicket taking was the biggest problem with only 31 in 2009. The season's joy came from a new under-11 squad who finished second behind Cullingworth and will be in Division One in 2010. Six wins was a great improvement from 2008 with only two losses (Cullingworth and Settle). They did lose to Earby in round 1 of the Cup. Bradley Akrigg was a batting qualifier. |
Sutton![]() |
The sporting accolades of 2009 go to Sutton under-13s who finished 3rd, just missing out on promotion in the Brook Taverner League. With nine wins, the same as Skipton and Glusburn they were the unlucky ones with just 2 defeats, both to Glusburn. A Cup hammering of Haworth was over-turned for the Worth Valley by Oxenhope in the next round. Ben Whitfield, Akeel Maqbool and Bilal Asif were all batting average qualifiers whilst runner-up Asif was joined by Sohail Mahommed and Hamza Ayud. Four rained off matches didn't help the under-15 cause but they still finished second, 6 points behind Skipton. Their three defeats came from Skipton, Settle and Gargrave. Earby knocked them out of the Hargreaves Cup after a first round win over Haworth West End. In Amjid Hussain and Ben Simons they had two fine batting qualifiers. It was as far back as 1959 that Sutton had taken the under-17 title but they rectified that on the 50th anniversary taking the KC2000 Championship by 4 points from Oakworth, with whom they had two very close matches. Their 11 wins was sufficient to offset defeats by Oakworth, Haworth West End and bottom club Steeton. Their Spencer Cup run ended in the semi-final with an 11 run loss to winners Embsay. Chris Williams joined Ben Simons and Amjid Hussain as a batting qualifier whilst Mohammed Shannawaz grabbed 25 wickets and 7th place in the bowling. |
Upper Wharfedale![]() |
The promoted under-17 team ended the 2009 year in 6th place
but well ahead of relegation. They had six wins and six defeats as they
settled back in the top drawer. They didn't though play a Cup match after a
win on a toss (Oxenhope) and then a concession to Haworth West End. The
bowlers were the best in Division but were held back by the normally
high-scoring batsmen. They did though have four qualifiers in
Ben Davey, Jack Schindler, Harry Eccleshall and
Ben Parkinson. The last 3 named also made the
bowling lists so where did it go wrong? The defeats to Oakworth, Sutton and
Skipton came off first knock batting collapses. 4 wins brought fifth place for the under-15s in a steady season. They did defeat Gargrave and Denholme before succumbing to Oakworth by 14 runs in the Hargreaves Cup semi-final. Ben Davey finished third best batter with 207 runs at over 51. Again with 2 teams in the Brook Taverner League the club proved very strong and the Stags squad claimed 11 wins, five points behind Champions Earby. The late season loss to Oakworth proved the differentiator in the title race. The 'combined' club team gained their revenge by easily defeating Oakworth in the John Hindle Cup Final after also knocking out Gargrave, Pendle Forest and Oxenhope. Callum Lockett, James Stephenson, Jack Shepherd, Matthew Price and Kyran Clarke all proved fine batsmen and qualified for the league list. Stephenson and Price made the bowling lists and Lockett and Price represented the Area with fine performances. Price went on to reach the County 'B' team. Congratulations. The Division Two Rams found life much more taxing with only 2 wins (Haworth twice) and 8th place. The under 11 Stags also finished runners up to another strong combo in Oxenhope. 10 wins and just 2 losses (Skipton and Oxenhope) was nevertheless a satisfying outcome for the squad. A first round narrow defeat to Earby was the only Cup action in 2009. The Rams in the lower Division failed to pick up a win and finished fifth of six. Oliver Whyte was runner up in the batting prize and Tom Webster, Joe Fawcett, Matt Daggett and Freddie Binns joined him in qualification. Fawcett, Binns and Daggett also made the standard at bowling. |
| Wilsden | New Club Wilsden entered at the tiny tot end of things and the summer tournament was a great introduction for them. They didn't manage a win but did complete all nine fixtures and the learning and experience must have been great. Watch out in 2010 for their first win. They may also enter at under-11. |
