|
The high hopes for promotion by the under-15 side were cruelly dashed for a 2nd year by the weather and a late season defeat by neighbours Pendle Forest. Their match with Oxenhope was a rain victim but they did manage a 20 run win over eventual Division Champions Oakworth as one of their seven wins in 8 matches completed. A stupendous 40-run 1st round Hargreaves Cup win over Oxenhope proved what might have been and a 2nd round win at Sutton raised hopes of silverware. Again it was the Forest who upset the apple-cart with a 3 wicket win on their way to victory in the Final. Most pundits opted for Earby under-13s as 2009 Champions and they didn't let them down. Thirteen cracking wins and just one defeat by 6 runs at rivals Wharfedale Stags gave them the Brook Taverner Championship by 5 points from the Stags. 1,371 runs and 88 wickets taken were the telling statistics. Macauley Cunningham showed his all-round talents with 13 wickets and Jake Hargreaves was an excellent foil with another 10. Cunningham added 228 runs to his CV but still finished runner-up to team mate Shane Taylforth as Cricketer-of-the-Year. Shane smashed the League run-scoring record with 327 and was only out twice! With really solid back-up from Jamaal Alcock and 'master-blaster' Luke Hipgrave the title success was no surprise. Hipgrave starred for the League u-12s with two half-centuries in his four appearances. The side's only real downer was losing out to Oxenhope in a tied first round Cup-tie. Taylforth represented the District with plenty of success as his career gains prominence. Mid-table security was the finish for the 2009 under-11s who picked up wins over Skipton, Oakworth and Silsden (2). The bowling was on the money but the high run-scoring was pegged back by the loss of 71 wickets, the highest in the Division. Kieran Mara was top batsman with 113 and he was joined as a bowling qualifier by Marcus Thornber, Jake Greenbank and Mason Naylor. The Barritt-Stephenson Cup was a possible target after wins over Wharfedale and Steeton but a hammering by eventual winners Oxenhope in the semi-final ended that hope. |
Embsay![]() |
Third place in the top Division showed yet further progress
for Embsay under-17s. 7 wins and 5 defeats represented fair reward for the
North Craven lads. There was 2 defeats to each of Sutton and Upper
Wharfedale and 1 to Oakworth with run-scoring and bowling around the
League's average. The side came into their own and performed well above
average to win the William Spencer
Cup for the first time in 20 years. It was arguably the best u-17
Final in years with rivals Skipton contributing in the 8-run margin thriller
at Ingrow, following the eviction of Champions Sutton in the semi-final.
Lloyd Davies led the batting with 244 runs at
over 30 with John Golson topping the bowling
attack with 21 wickets at just over 11. Matching their senior mates, the 2008 double-winning under-15s also finished third behind Skipton and Sutton. But with just 3 defeats, the 6 abandoned matches scuppered any chance of honours. They couldn't though emulate the Cup success suffering a 1 wicket loss in the round 1 to eventual winners Pendle Forest. Without the support of an under-11 nursery the under 13 team found the going really tough and took just one win over Haworth West End. With run-scoring at less than 10 per wicket and bowling at over 27 the inexperienced youngsters will play 2010 in Division Two. Their rock was Joe Holt and he chipped in 173 runs at over 21 in a year of 'learning'. |
| Gargrave |
A four place hike up the Division Two table brought Gargrave
under-17s a promotion after claiming 6 wins in their 12 fixtures. An early
win against Cononley singled the side as potentially upwardly mobile but it
was only when they grabbed a 5-wicket win over rivals Bingley Congs that the
trip was confirmed on run-rate. Once again the bowling attack were prime
movers in the success with Danny Bowditch in
fourth place with 15 wickets at under 10. The Cup exit came at the hands of
Cononley. Promoted in 2008, the solid under-15s did most things right, consolidating with fourth place in the top drawer. Five wins including one over runners-up Sutton, was richly deserved. Like their senior counterparts bowling was their strength and if the batting can develop well who knows what 2010 can bring? There was to be no consolation in the Cup competition with a 1st round exit at Upper Wharfedale by 4 wickets. Completing a satisfying season for the club as a whole, the under-13s took 6 wins in their new home of Division Two of the Brook Taverner League. Their 3 defeats came at Champions Skipton (twice) and promoted Glusburn in a fourth place finish only 5 points short of promotion. A night to remember was at home to Skipton as an unpredictable collapse had the team all out for just 19. The defeat by Wharfedale in the Cup completed a hat trick of first round exits for the club. Four players Joseph Metcalfe, Joe Wood, Jonah Smith and a first girl Georgina Smith all represented the league at under-12 level. |
Glusburn![]() |
After
leaving the CartaSport League behind as Champions, the Brook Taverner League
presented a challenge to the emerging Glusburn under-13s. They lived up to
the billing with nine wins and only 2 defeats to gain promotion at the first
time of asking. One defeat was to Division winners Skipton and the second
surprisingly at home to Denholme. The promotion was clinched in a sporting
match with rivals Sutton at season's end. There was a preliminary round exit
from the Hindle Cup at the hands of Oxenhope. For the Glusburn batting line
up there was 200 runs for new boy Jack Roberts
but it was the bowling which took the eye, none more so than
Alex Horsfield with 17 wickets as the League's
best at 4.29. Another 15 wickets from Joshua Storr
proved crucial. Brother Thomas Storr and
Horsfield both represented the League u-12s well, Alex contributing with the
bat. Still a relatively young side the under-17s perhaps would be disappointed that 2009 didn't turn out better. They had 3 wins against the bottom clubs and dropped one place to fifth. There was no joy either in the Cup, losing in round 1 to Steeton. |
| Haworth |
Ten defeats for an almost new line up in the under-13s has
given the Haworth boys much needed experience and they should now be able to
progress from their bottom placing of 2009. The loss of 72 wickets in 10
completed games is an obvious source of potential improvement. A 20 all out
in the Cup match with Sutton is a low point from which to build in 2010. One
lad who will look forward surely with much anticipation is
Matthew Woodus who burst on the bowling scene
taking 11 wickets at under 8. With one win the under-15s fared marginally better, finishing ninth of 10 teams. Ironically the one win was over Denholme who gained revenge knocking the Bronte boys out of the Cup. The batting seems stable but the bowling whilst taking wickets proved expensive, shipping over 100 runs per match completed. The under-17 season too was barren with nine defeats in a season perhaps the Haworth club might want to forget. The batting and bowling both proved weak. Only 497 runs scored versus 1,245 conceded illustrates the point along with only 36 wickets taken. The consolation might be that surely 2010 must be better for a club who have twice won the Cup this Century. |
Haworth West End![]()
|
Five defeats for the West End under-17s was a real
surprise for most onlookers, who perhaps expected a stronger challenge for
the KC200 Championship. It seemed that scoring 164 and losing against
eventual Champions Sutton, knocked the stuffing out of the side and they
finished fourth. Three un-played matches didn't help nor did a narrow 3 run
loss in the Cup semi-final, a curious year for a side not short of talent.
Tinashe Gomwe was a clear winner of the league
batting prize (collected by Callum Jones) and with qualification from
Joe Bottomley, Callum Jones and
Joe Alvey perhaps the bowling might not have
been quite up to the mark. 2008 runners-up the under-15s found the going strenuous in 2009 and only one win (Steeton) came their way with inevitable relegation to Division Two. A 76-run drubbing in the Cup from Sutton was also a blow. But in common with many others the West Enders can point to the abysmal Wednesday weather which left six fixtures un-played. The good news came from the under-13s who having been promoted in 2008, consolidated their position in 6th place in Division One, ready for a title challenge perhaps in 2010? They secured their place with 3 wins over Pendle Forest, Settle and a high-scoring match with Oakworth. The season did fall away slightly but the bowling was generally good enough to sustain them. A 1st round Cup win over Silsden was followed by a 17-run loss to Division winners Skipton. District cricketer Josh Holt along with Charlie Shimmin and a past cricketer-of-the-year Liam Chipman all made the batting list. Samee Tariq has developed well and his bowling delivered 11 wickets in the year. A young under-11s team took 2 wins and moved up 2 places to 4th in Division Two of the CartaSport League. Settle and Bingley Congs were their scalps in a year of improvement if not in spectacular fashion. The Cup was exited at the first stage with defeat by Silsden. Kian Shaw and Jordan Powell made their mark as batsmen but the bowling perhaps requires some further progress. |
