THE CARTASPORT LEAGUE For under 11s |
Under 11s League Report week 10
League leaders Oakworth Sharks made the trip to Grassington worthwhile returning with 3 points and a 47 run win. The Sharks were in fighting form and none snappier than skipper Ben Howell who scored 23 to take his season tally to 131. With 3 other double figure scores the Sharks grabbed 284-3. The Dales innings had 11 from Jack Paul at its heart but they were ell short with 237-3. A topsy-turvy match at Gargrave ultimately went to Oxenhope after both teams had late wobblers. Harry Lambert took his second successive 3-for and Jonah Smith reciprocated. Gargrave made 193-7 whilst the winners ended at 211-4. Keighley picked up their first win of the year against Bradley by 230-4 vs 187-8. Foe the winners R Ali scored 13 and Will Greenwood popped in11 for the losers.
Denholme had leading batsman Toby Priestley in scintillating form against new team Steeton. He scored 33, the season's second highest and it facilitated a daunting 264-5. A spirited reply from the young Steeton lads took them to 223-6, Ceri Holland topping the bill with 9 and a wicket. At Cure Hill Ben Weatherall of Oakworth Phoenix too was in majestic form with the bat taking 29 from the Haworth West End attack. He had good back up from Jordan Powell 16 and Aaron Blakeley 13 in 260-5. The West End youngsters worked hard and Phoebe Robb chipped in 7. William Rankin was hot with the ball taking 3 for 7 including 2 in 2 balls as West End tallied 178-7.
Under 11s League Report week 9
Master Blaster Luke Hipgrave was at it again with another 30 score for his Earby side at Bradley. The young batsman now has 164 runs to his name and is only 13 short of the record season tally by Chris Bowker (Earby) in 2005. With Tyler McGladdery making 19 the Earby score shot up to 276-2. Marcus Thornber then got in on the act with 3 wickets for 6 to restrict the Bradley batsmen to 188-6. Harry McGowan made a useful 12. The Sharks bit off a little more than they could chew at neighbours Oxenhope, who scored 238-5. Lewis Hopkinson was top batter with 10. The Sharks made a promising start and with a fine 15 from Ben Howell the match could have gone either way but the Oxenhope bowlers held their nerve to keep Oakworth at 217-6. The early season roll for Skipton is at a standstill after a defeat to Upper Wharfedale. Angus McCabe contributed 16 and Joshua Waind 10 in a 205-5 total. The up-country boys also had new lad S Booth 16, James Davey 12 and Matthew Jackson 10 all in the runs to win with 250-3. Gargrave imposed themselves right at the heart of the Championship battle after a 118 run win over bottom side Keighley. The Gargrave 268-2 included 17 from Thomas Storr. The Oakworth Sharks retain the Championship lead on run-rate from Skipton and Gargrave with Oxenhope very much in the rear view mirrors.
Simon Tarbox led the Settle mayhem with the ball taking 4 for 4 to reduce visitors Silsden to 164-13. Lachlan Irvine-Hand made 14 but was out twice. The Settle batsmen were much more cautious with their wickets and tallied 245-1, John Davidson making 12 of them. After just 8 (on field) matches Cowling 235-2 have their first win against fellow newcomers Steeton 218-6. Two wickets each for Ashley Kelly and J Melling were enough alongside the 10 runs from John Armstrong to take the points. A Phoenix side depleted by school trips and the Sharks match nevertheless gave opportunity to more of the squad who mustered a creditable 188-5. Division leaders Glusburn had far too much fire power with Alex Horsfield smashing 22 at the head of the innings. With 4 matches remaining Glusburn require 4 points to be certain of promotion. Later Oakworth Phoenix had a fine fielding display with run outs of the Cowling batsmen. Sam Solley was in belligerent mood with 17 but out twice. The Cowling 174-8 was well short of the Phoenix 251-2. Silsden proved too strong for Settle with 240-5 versus 185-5, Top performers for Silsden were Tom Greenwood with 19 and Ben Appleyard with 14. Glusburn emerged victorious in a tight match with Silsden and now need just 1 point from their 3 remaining fixtures for promotion to Division One for 2009. The fixtures are away at Haworth WE and Settle with the rained of match at Steeton still available for replay. The 14 and 1 for 7 from Glusburn's Dominic Mortimer were crucial contributions in a hard working side for Ben Appleyard 13 and Joseph Sugden 10 didn't make life easy for the season-long leaders.
Under 11s League Report week 8
Fresh from their Barritt-Stephenson Cup quarter final success the Sharks weren't basking in the myriad of midge flies as they snapped up the points from the Earby visitors to go top of the CartaSport League. The Earby 226-5 sprang into life with 10 from Jake Greenbank and 17 from Luke Hipgrave but he lost his wicket twice to negate his run scoring. The Sharks voracious run appetite was sated with 24 from skipper Ben Howell (out once) and Jack Keighley 11 in a biting 277-2 second knock. Ironically the Cup semi-final will be between these teams also at Wide Lane.
Meanwhile across at Penistone Hill the Phoenix XI were less robust with their scoring but equally effective with their wicket taking; 13 of the West Enders in fact. William Rankin had a great night with 11 runs and 2 for 9 but Jack McGrogan 3-8 and Ben Weatherall 3-11 also will have slept well in the 148-13 opposition reply.
Under 11s League Report week 7
Gargrave tallied a useful 268-2 which proved too many for Bradley who made 203-4. Matthew Beckwith led the North Craven boys with 15 and Georgina Smith added 14 to put the match beyond the reach of the visitors. Two days later league leaders Skipton crashed to the upwardly-mobile Gargrave team by 5 runs. Despite 15 from James Otulakowski and 12 from Angus McCabe the table toppers succumbed to the power of the Smiths, Georgina with 11 and Jonah with 10. Gargrave move up to third place whilst Skipton after their second defeat eye Oakworth Sharks with perhaps a feeling of soon to arrive menace. Keighley put up a spirited show against Oxenhope just losing by 17 runs. A Kazam scored 12 as did Tom Addison and Connor Mahon foe the winners who made 245-2
The u-11 Cobbydale derby went to home club Silsden by 76 runs. Ben Shepherd was again in the runs with 16 and Ben Appleyard also made double figures in their 216-6. The Silsden bowlers dominated the plucky young Steeton side in their first season. The promotion battle took a turn towards South Craven as Glusburn completed a narrow double over fellow challengers Denholme. At Denholme the margin was just 2 runs despite 44 runs from the home last three batsmen (Joseph Jagger 17). Not for the first time wicket loss proved decisive. At Glusburn the margin widened to 8 runs thanks to Alex Horsfield 12 and Nick Firth 10 and late boundaries for Sammy Warriner and Nathan Parker. A super tight bowling display from Settle won them the match at Cowling after a 206-5 posting. The fast developing young Cowling side tallied 195-5 in a spirited response.
Under 11s League Report week 6
Champions Earby finally got their show on the road with a 19 run win over bottom side Keighley, owing a great deal to the 30 from master blaster Luke Hipgrave. There was a real cliff hanger in the dales as the home side Gargrave hung on by 1 run from a stiff challenge from a highly competitive Wharfedale. Second placed Oakworth Sharks were in voracious mood snapping up a 135 run win over Keighley whilst leaders Skipton kept the pressure up with a narrow 8-run margin over Oxenhope, Angus McCabe was the major force with 20. So Skipton stay ahead of the Sharks by 3 points but the Worth Valley team have a match in hand. Bradley join Keighley in the relegation slots.
New entrants Steeton found the going tough as Oakworth Phoenix rose to the challenge with Jordan Powell rattling up 22, claiming an 86 run win. Silsden (Tom Greenwood 17, Ben Appleyard 16) travelled up to Denholme and came back with the points by a 29 run margin. The Cobbydale side also proved too strong for debutants Cowling. Ben Shepherd's bowling was exceptional with 4 for 1 and the back up from Joseph Sugden 3-0 sealed the points . The Phoenix grabbed their second win of the week after the long haul to Settle. Up and coming young bowler Sam Nettleton netted a hat-trick in his 4 for 3 to sit along side the 3-0 from Jack Keighley. Glusburn, who didn't play, now edge ahead of Denholme on run rate with Silsden and Oakworth Phoenix leading the chasers.
Under 11s League Report week 5
Once again a stealthy approach to batting from the Sharks had them swimming with 242-4, Ben Howell again to the fore. Searching for victims at Bradley though proved more taxing and only 2 were gobbled up. Bradley though did find run scoring a pain and ended on 209-2, William Greenwood scoring 10 of them. The Sharks now sit atop the Division ahead of Skipton on run rate. Later in the week Bradley faced Skipton and came away pointless again. Skipton batsman George Sutcliffe played a wonderful second innings, after an earlier 17 from Angus McCabe, a season's best of 37 (nine 4s), only 2 short of the record. Not surprisingly Bradley (C Downs 11) found keeping pace with that sort of hitting somewhat difficult and their 228-2 was well short of the Skipton 274-3. Gargarve kept Champions Earby in the relegation slot with a 49 run win. Joseph Metcalfe 11 and George Beckwith led a competent batting performance to 254-2. Whilst Luke Hipgarve made 13, Earby lost wickets making 205-5.
Silsden came away from Oakworth with a startling 306-1 as their batsmen all made hay, none more so than Calvin Hay with 21. There was 16 for Liam Hand and 15 for Tom Greenwood as excellent back up. The young u-10 Phoenix innings of just 203-7 was in ashes in reply although Jordan Powell showed excellent form with 19 in the heavy defeat. Glusburn joined Denholme as joint leaders of the Second Division with 15 points and almost identical run-rates. The Glusburn win came against new boys Cowling who showed defensive resilience managing 182-6. However the more experienced Glusburn outfit scored a solid 258-2, Pat Lee top scoring with 14. Settle took their second win by 79 runs as new boys Steeton suffered early wicket loss with a startling 4 for 6 for Daniel Strickland. John Davidson was outstanding with 13 and 2 wickets for 3.
Under 11s League Report week 4
The Sharks from Oakworth gobbled up the points in their entertaining clash with upper Wharfedale with a 237-2 first knock proving too many for the young Wharfedale boys who made 200-6. Skipper Ben Howell led the Sharks batsmen and Sam Nettleton the bowlers but the fielding and throwing of Chris Kemp took the eye with two direct hits. The winners couldn't though contain the Dales lad Oliver Whyte who made a blistering 18. Skipton lost their unbeaten tag with an 18 run reverse at the hands of the Oakworth Sharks. George Sutcliffe grabbed 18 runs but his efforts were thwarted by a solid all-round performance from the marauding Sharks, who now move to within 3 points of the beaten Division leaders. Over at Oxenhope a match for batsmen produced a nerve racking two run win for the home side after a 244-2 score against a game Gargrave team, who lost just one wicket making 242. The Worth Valley hero was Josh Ferguson who smashed a last pair 18 to wrest the points in a classic contest.
Toby Priestley smashed a season's second best yet 20 (four 4s) off the young Steeton attack and then came back and added another 10 in his second innings. With Matthew Wear on 13 the Denholme total reached a formidable 261-2. New boys (and girls) Steeton battled gamely losing just 5 wickets making 223. Oakworth Phoenix encountered consistently better bowling at Glusburn and only Jordan Powell 13 made any inroads. For the home side Dominic Mortimer 13 and Louis Horsfield 12 added enough to reach a stunning winning margin of 61 runs. The two teams meet again this week in the Cup QF. Cowling were caught unawres by the batting of Charlie Shimmin 14 and Ben Stowell 17 in a 40 run defeat by Haworth West End. Nevertheless the new side battled gamely to reach 213-5. The same new boys in the return, Cowling rattled in a fantastic 265-1 score, which would win many a match but the Haworth West End boys countered with an amazing 269-6. The victory owed much again to Charlie Shimmin who stroked 16 runs. Denholme lost fewer wickets than Silsden in what was in reality a close game. Matthew Wear and Harry Muir exchanged 17 scores whilst Toby Priestley continued his great run with another 16 also matched by Tom Leech. The difference as always was wickets lost and Denholme had much fewer.
Under 11s League Report week 3
Under 11s League Report week 2
Skipton rearranged their rained off match with Upper Wharfedale and claimed the points with a 13 run margin. Leading light was Joshua Waind who grabbed 4 for 1 to help restrict the Dales boys whose total of 184-9 owed much to Oliver Whyte's 13. Skipton now take an early 3 point lead at the head of the table.
In a match for once dominated by batsmen Glusburn overcame Silsden by a narrow 8 runs thanks to fine batting from Alex Horsfield 11 whilst the Cobbydalers replied with 225-2 including a 14 score from Ben Shepherd.
Under 11s League Report week 1
The teams from Earby and Oakworth Sharks reverted to type with Oakworth again not giving a wicket away in a 231-0 innings. Typically Champions Earby outscored Sharks by two runs from the bat but with 3 wickets down the points were gobbled up by the voracious Sharks. Luke Hipgrave top scored for Earby with 10 whilst Ben Howell and Thomas Fothergill were the leading teeth for the Sharks.
Oxenhope put up a solid 259-2 scoreline for the Keighley attack to tackle. Sadly the Lawkholme lads mustered just 22 from the bat and a 190-4 reply.
Upper Wharfedale bowlers showed their mettle in a home match with a young Bradley team. Edward Daggett turned in 3-0 and Hamer, Davey and Whyte each grabbed a brace in a Bradley 127-12. Wharfedale scored 210-4 and claimed an 83-run win but ironically had a top scorer with only 4 runs.
Bowlers were also right on top at Gargrave on Friday and none more so than home lad Thomas Storr whose 3 overs netted him a fabulous 4-4. The derby match with Skipton was a nerve tingler as the visitors lost 8 wickets making 170. Storr had great back up from George Beckwith 2-0. But last year's runners-up fought back strongly led by Angus McCabe 2-3 and Jane Newell 2-0 and Gargrave ended 7 short on 163-8.
Charlie Shimmin led his Haworth West End colleagues well with 11 runs and 2-3 in a 170-8 total. Those lost wickets cost them dear as Steeton scored 208-5 to take all the points in their inaugural Division Two CartaSport match. The Steeton bowling attack picked up wickets steadily with Matthew Klava 2-4 the most outstanding.
League debutants Oakworth Phoenix consisting all under-10s responded to 240-1 by Denholme with a creditable 213-3. The winners had to thank Brad Greenwood as without his terrific 17 the match may well have been closer.
